National Endowment for Democracy

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is a private, nonprofit foundation dedicated to the growth and strengthening of democratic institutions around the world. Each year, NED makes 1600 direct grants to hundreds of nongovernmental organizations worldwide working to advance democratic goals and strengthen democratic institutions. These grants support organizations working for democratic goals in more than 90 countries. Grant amounts vary depending on the size and scope of the projects, but the average grant lasts 12 months and is around $50,000.

Proposals should seek to: promote civic education; strengthen civil society organizations; promote independent media; promote and defend human rights and the rule of law; strengthen democratic ideas and values; strengthen democratic political processes and institutions; strengthen a broad-based market economy.
